The Doors Early Days 1966-1967

May 23, 1966 — May 21, 1967
The Doors Headliner

The Doors' formative period on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. After a residency at the London Fog club, the band became the house band at the legendary Whisky a Go Go from May to August 1966, opening for acts like Love, Buffalo Springfield, and Captain Beefheart. They were fired on August 21, 1966 after Jim Morrison's erratic on-stage behavior during a performance of 'The End.' Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman signed the band after seeing them at the Whisky. Early 1967 saw the band's debut album release and first headlining shows at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium.
