English rock band from Manchester, formed in 1982 (disbanded 1987). Morrissey (vocals), Johnny Marr (guitar), Andy Rourke (bass, d. 2023), Mike Joyce (drums). One of the most important bands of the 1980s. Defined indie rock with literate, melancholic songwriting and jangly guitar. Albums include The Smiths, Meat Is Murder, The Queen Is Dead, and Strangeways Here We Come.
