American Piedmont blues/gospel guitarist from Laurens, South Carolina (1896-1972). Blind from infancy. 'Cocaine Blues' (1935, became a folk standard), 'Samson and Delilah,' 'Death Don't Have No Mercy' (Grateful Dead covered it). The most technically accomplished acoustic guitar player in blues. Fingerpicking master. Taught Stefan Grossman, Jorma Kaukonen.
