American bluegrass musician from Stratton, Virginia (1927-2016). With brother Carter as The Stanley Brothers, then solo. 'O Death' in O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000, Grammy winner). 'Man of Constant Sorrow.' Primitive, haunting a cappella and clawhammer banjo. Kept old-time Appalachian music alive for 60 years.
