English pub rock band from Canvey Island, Essex, formed 1971. Wilko Johnson (guitar, d. 2022), Lee Brilleaux (vocals, d. 1994). Down by the Jetty (1975), Malpractice (1975), Stupidity (1976, live, #1 UK). R&B-fired proto-punk. Wilko's choppy, machine-gun guitar directly inspired punk. Stupidity was UK's first live #1 album.
