American pianist and poet from New York City (1929-2018). Pioneer of free jazz piano. Unit Structures (1966), Conquistador! (1966). Percussive, dense, virtuosic — treated the piano as an 88-key percussion instrument. MacArthur Fellow. One of jazz's most radical and important figures.
