American free jazz saxophonist from Cleveland (1936-1970). Spiritual Unity (1965) and Ghosts are landmarks of free jazz. Raw, ecstatic, spiritual saxophone playing that shocked and inspired. Influenced Coltrane's later work. Found dead in the East River at 34. A titanic figure in avant-garde music.
